School Work - Home

In this section of the website you can find information to support learning conversations at home.

In Years 7, 8, 9, all students follow Courses which include:

Some students will be given an opportunity to study a second foreign language in Year 9. In Years 10 and 11, most courses lead to external examination.

There are 2 main components:

1. Core Area:

This involves 60% of the timetable.

2. Option Area

Pupils can choose from a range of subjects including an increasing number of vocational courses.
This involves 40% of the timetable.

Help and advice is available in Year 9 to assist students to make the best choice for their future studies and career. A booklet about Key Stage 4 choices is published in the Spring Term for students in Year 9 and their parents.

Courses offered are designed to prepare students for public examinations at GCSE, GNVQ, NVQ, Certificate of Achievement, ASDAN Award Scheme and Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, approved by the DfEE.

In the majority of subject areas the pupils are taught in sets. A variety of engaging co-operate learning activities are used depending on the nature of the subject and the content being taught at any instance.

Special provision is provided for children with learning problems so that basic skills are mastered. Specialist teachers in the Special Education Department offer assistance in either small groups, by withdrawal, or within class lessons as appropriate.

The School has a detailed S.E.N. Policy which has recently been updated and is available on request. In essence the policy emphasises our commitment to maximising access to a broad and balanced curriculum for S.E.N. students; it outlines the key role of the S.E.N. Co-ordinator in managing procedures and resources; and it underlines the importance of partnerships with Stockport's Learning Support Service, parents and outside agencies.

The school is proud of the S.E.N. Department's work and the success achieved with statemented students at GCSE level and elsewhere.

Gifted and Talented Pupils at Werneth
Shortly after their arrival about 10% of the students in Year 7 are identified as being either academically 'gifted' in subjects such as Maths, English and Science, or 'talented' in Art, Music, PE, Expressive Arts and Technology.

These students are supported throughout their five years at Werneth and are given opportunities in the classroom that will challenge and stimulate them. Many extra-curricular enrichment activities are offered such as 'Puzzle Club', 'Philosophy Club', Museum and Theatre visits and, in Year l0, university visits and summer schools.
