To support transition from primary to secondary, all students in year 7 follow a ‘Werneth Cares’ curriculum for their first week. They are taught by all members of the senior leadership team, including the headteacher, lessons to support them in engaging in learning for the rest of their time at Werneth.
In years 7 and 8 all students follow a core curriculum of; English, Mathematics, Science, ICT, History, Geography, Religious Education, Art, Dance, Drama, Music, Technology (Food Technology, Resistant Materials and Product Design), Physical Education, PSE (Personal, and Social Education) and Modern Foreign Languages (French, German and Spanish).
The same applies in year 9 however in some subjects students have the opportunity to commence accredited qualifications. These include: GCSE modular mathematics, BTEC performing arts, functional skills in English, Mathematics and ICT. Students in top sets also commence GCSE courses in Science, History and Geography in year 9.
The timetable at Werneth is structured st Key Stage 4 so that a core curriculum is followed for 3 days each week and students then follow their chosen pathway for the other two days. Some pathways have entry criteria such as attainment and attendance and students will be guided and supported with their choice by their form teacher and subject teachers at the school.
All students follow a core curriculum of; English, Mathematics, Science, ICT, Physical Education, PSE (Personal, and Social Education) and Religious Education. With the exception of PSE all these subjects result in an accredited qualification.
In addition to this core curriculum they choose one of five pathways:
GCSE/BTEC pathway: students can choose three options from the following list:
*Arts subjects: GCSE Fine Art, GCSE Graphic Art, GCSE Sculpture, GCSE Dual Award in Visual Art, GCSE Photography, GCSE Dance, BTEC Dance, GCSE Drama, BTEC Performing Arts, GCSE Music.
*As a specialist college in performing and visual arts, students are encouraged to select at least one arts option.
Science and Technology Subjects: GCSE Product Design, GCSE Resistant Materials, GCSE Catering, GCSE Food Technology, GCSE Textiles, AS level Science, GCSE Psychology.
Humanities subjects: GCSE History, GCSE Geography
DIDA (diploma in Digital Applications), BTEC Certificate in Business Studies, BTEC Diploma in Business Studies.
GCSE French, GCSE German, GCSE Spanish
GCSE Media Studies, GCSE Film Studies, GCSE Health & Social Care
Apprenticeship Pathway: students follow a young apprenticeship course (equivalent to 5 GCSEs at A*-C) for 2 days per week. Students will study in college for half their time and on a work placement for the remainder. Apprenticeships include: Business Administration and Finance, Health and Social Care, Sport and Recreation, Construction, Motor Vehicle and Hairdressing.
Diploma Pathway: students follow a diploma course for two days per week. A higher diploma is equivalent to 7 GCSEs at A*-C and a foundation diploma is equivalent to 5 GCSEs at D-G. Diplomas are available in; Creative and Media, Society Health and Development, Construction, Engineering, Sport and Recreation, Hospitality, Business Administration and Finance, Retail and Engineering.
College Pathway: students spend one day per week at college following a level 1 course (GCSE equivalent to grades D-G) and one day in school following a BTEC Public Services course. College courses include; hairdressing, beauty therapy, construction, motor vehicle, motor cycle, catering.
Tracks Pathway: is for students who have been identified as requiring a personalised alternative curriculum which can include a college course, an extended work placement (1 or 2 days), an ASDAN qualification or a combination of any of these including taking some options.
Werneth strives to equip all students with the skills they need for their futures. We achieve this through our enrichment and enterprise days and weeks which we call CAN-DO! During CAN-DO students can opt to take part in a range of activities both on and off site such as; skiing in France, Science and Art collaborative trip to Chester Zoo, Army assault course, rocket launching, personal financial awareness classes, etc.
At Werneth our timetable rolls-over in June. This means that there is no lost time between the end of key stage 3 and the start of key stage 4.
