The Geography department is a vibrant, forward-thinking department that offers a dynamic, motivating and thought provoking series of topics throughout Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. We believe in utilising a wide range of resources and teaching and learning strategies to cater for the learning styles and aptitude of all of our students. The subject is compulsory at Key Stage 3 and taught in three 1 hour lesson each fortnight. Students have the option to take the GCSE course at the end of Year 9 and are delivered 6 lessons each fortnight.
At Key Stage 3 the themes studied combine the more traditional, yet still invaluable topics such as Volcanoes and Earthquakes, Development and Tourism, with new 21st century relevant topics that include: The Geography of Conflict, Extreme Weather and the Geography of Football. All are designed to engage, enthuse and offer appropriate learning challenges to students so that all may maximise their potential.
At Key Stage 4 the course is studied over 2 years and is worth 1 GCSE. The examination board specification followed is the AQA A syllabus. The format of assessment is based around each candidate submitting 1 piece of coursework worth a total of 25% of the final grade. The remaining 75% of the final grade is made up of 2 90minute examination papers each worth 37.5%. One paper focuses on physical geography, the other human geography. Among the topics we study at GCSE are coasts, the living world and globalisation.
Whilst studying Geography you will learn and develop ICT, drawing and map reading skills, teamwork and independent learning. You will also develop and awareness and understanding of how we are connected to people and events all over the planet and ultimately responsible for the world in which we live!
