The History department is a dynamic, forward-thinking department that offers a vibrant, motivating and thought provoking series of topics throughout Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. We have achieved consistently good results at GCSE over the past few years. We believe in utilising a wide range of resources and teaching and learning strategies to cater for the learning styles and aptitude of all of our students. The subject is compulsory at Key Stage 3 and taught in three 1-hour lessons each fortnight. Students have the option to take the GCSE course at the end of Year 9. Students can also start the GCSE in Year 9 if they are in the top set.

At Key Stage 3 students study a wide variety of topics including the Incas, the French Revolution and British History.

At Key Stage 4 the course is studied over 2 years and is worth 1 GCSE. The examination board specification followed is the AQA B syllabus. The format of assessment is based around each candidate submitting 1 piece of coursework worth a total of 25% of the final grade. The remaining 75% of the final grade is made up of 2 90minute examination papers each worth 37.5%. One paper focuses on Causes of the First and Second World Wars, The League of Nations and the Cold War the other concentrates on the USA 1920-1939 and the rise of Hitler in Germany.

We also organise quite a few activities during Can Do Days which have included archaeology at Mellor, the Liverpool Maritime Museum, guest speakers and a trip to the First World War battlefields.

Whilst studying History you will learn and develop ICT, literacy skills, teamwork and independent learning.
