2010 has brought massive change to the Languages Department here at Werneth School and we are proud to now offer French, German, Spanish and Italian to our students. Our department motto is ‘The Sky is Not the Limit’, and this is very much reflected in every decision made by our forward thinking staff and lead learners. We have recently begun a system of support in many of our feeder primaries and as such are now both teaching and team planning with our feeder primary staff. The aim here is to enable our learners at as young an age as possible to becoming multi lingual global citizens.
Our schemes of work are meaningful and focus on language that can be used in realistic situations when on holiday, and we aim to enter as many of our students for GCSE, or another appropriate qualification at a time that is right for them personally. As such many of our students will leave Key Stage 3 with a formal qualification in another language. At this stage they can either choose to enter Key stage four and learn a new language or continue into AS and A2 in their second language.
There are 4 trips abroad up and coming for our department. We are going to Paris, Cologne for the Christmas markets, Marrakech with the Art Department and Barcelona in 2011. We recognise the importance of bringing languages alive in as many different contexts as possible, and combine these trips with a comprehensive range of teaching styles to include all our learners and their personal needs. Every child can learn a second language. We enable this.
